Not gonna lie, I’d drive it. Especially with a manual.

Would you agree it sits like this?

Kinja'd!!!

Seat inexplicably high for a small car, shifter way too low, steering wheel in your face. It felt like it was designed for an chimpanzee.

Teacher back in school had one and actually sat down with me and went over the performance choices these offered that couldn’t be had in another American car at the time. Immediately I knew we had a kindredship.

Yep. My grandad had an ‘87 AWD Tempo sedan on his used car lot when I was little.

these were actually quite peppy for the day. One of these vs a 2.8L Beretta at a stop light would make for some serious 80's drag racing....

Back when i was a mechanic Tempos will still fairly popular. I don’t think I ever saw an AWD that still had it’s rear drive shafts. U joints werent serviceable and when they went bad they would shake the crap out of the car, so people just took them out instead of replacing the axle.

another funny tempo story. customer came in complaining of a clunk in the front end. tempos, like other ford products of that vintage, had the struts connect to the knuckle with a single pinch bolt. now you may think you know where this is going, but you don’t. Apparently someone had replaced the front springs (which often broke), and the broke off the pinch bolt (which often happens here in the rust belt). but instead of drilling out and replacing the pinch bolt, which isn’t really that hard, they attempted to weld the strut to the knuckle. So you can imagine that guy didn’t get very good penetration trying to weld an oil-filled steel tube to a cast iron knuckle. the weld failed, causing the strut to bounce in and out of the knuckle. the customer was actually lucky it didn’t come all the way out.

Also- the Tempo holds my personal record for fastest exhaust system replacement ever. From service write up to cash out: 8 minutes.

I don’t think it’d look out of place in a showroom next to an R129 MB SL.

I saw a Tempo the other day at the grocery store, which is probably the fist time I’ve seen one in the past 20 years, and for the first time it dawned on my that Ford was copying MBZ styling with this car.

It looks very similar to a contemporary E-class. Though I think I would say they’re an example of independent development leading to similar results before I accused either of copycatting. Both fit very well in their respective corporate design languages and are obvious evolutions of the models immediately preceding them.

I think this gen Tempo has design elements that are obviously lifted from W201/W124 Benzes because the previous gen didn’t have the MB styling cues. But it’s far from a direct ripoff and definitely looks like a Ford product of the era.
